Understanding NMC Revalidation

Every three years, nurses, midwives, and nursing associates in the UK need to go through Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Revalidation. It's like a checkup to make sure they're still up to date with their skills and doing the best job they can. This helps to keep patients safe and the public confident in the nursing and midwifery professions.

What is the NMC?

The NMC regulates the standards of care provided by registered nurses, midwives and nursing associates in the UK. This ensures they meet high clinical, training and professional development standards, ultimately safeguarding the level of care patients receive.

What you need to complete your NMC revalidate:

  • Have at least 450 hours of practice in the past 3 years.

  • Do 35 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to your practice. This could be things like courses, conferences, or workshops.

  • Get feedback on your practice from colleagues, supervisors, or patients.

  • Write about what you learned from 3 of your CPD activities.

  • Have a talk with a qualified professional about your practice, CPD, and future learning goals.

  • Disclose any health conditions or character concerns that might affect your ability to practice.

How can we help you gather these requirements?

We can assist with 3 of the requirements:

  1. Proof of practical hours.

We offer a certificate of registration that details your work with A24Group agencies. This document includes:

    • The total amount of time you have spent on assignments with our group.

    • The specific role you performed during those assignments.

    • An outline of the core duties and responsibilities associated with your position.

  2. 35 hours of Continued Professional Development.

Boost your professional development and unlock new opportunities! Explore our extensive selection of online and mandatory practical training partnerships, offering over 39 CPD-supported courses at discounted rates. This includes essential training in moving and handling, life support, and various other areas to enhance your skillset.

Don't forget: Upload all your certificates to Staffshift for safekeeping and to showcase your newly acquired skills to potential employers, opening doors to exciting new shift opportunities.

To be better prepared, you can log all training within the NMC-provided CPD log template

  3. Feedback on your practice from peers, supervisors or patients.

When you are placed on an assignment with BNA, you will receive a timesheet as well as a feedback form. We strongly recommend getting your feedback form completed at the same time as you are getting it signed by your supervisor or line manager. This then gets submitted to us, and we will store it safely on our system until you need to revalidate. This process allows you to continually add to your feedback accounts.

You can also use the NMC feedback log to keep track on your completed documents

Which requirements will you be responsible for providing for your NMC revalidation?

You need to write five reflective accounts. Each one should be on a separate form and focus on one of these:

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD): What you learned from a training course or activity and how it improved your work.

  • Feedback: How feedback from a colleague, supervisor, or patient helped you grow.

  • An Event or Experience: Something that happened at work and what you learned from it.

  • The Nursing and Midwifery Council Code: How you apply one of the NMC principles in your daily practice – We have summarised the code for your reference here.

You will also need to have a reflective discussion with another member of the register. Here you can discuss your goals, achievements and learning. This process promotes collaboration. And the context and details of the discussion need to be provided on the NMC provided form

Health and Character Declaration

Your health and character are fundamental to your career and upholding the code of practice. While you won't need to submit any separate forms or proof, you'll be asked to complete declarations within your application. It's crucial to answer these questions honestly and accurately to ensure you are meeting the standards for safe and ethical practice.

Lastly, you will need to have another NMC professional assess your revalidation evidence and confirm that your submission is complete. You can use this form to complete this step, but please remember that the privacy of your peers is paramount, so do not disclose any personal information about them. You will need to include your confirmers NMC Pin on your application.

Easy! Now you can revalidate with confidence.
