International Nurses Day 2026

Honouring the Heroes: Our Empowered Nurses Save Lives

On 12 May, International Nurses Day 2026, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in healthcare. At the British Nursing Association (BNA), we believe that every day is an opportunity to recognise the incredible impact of our nursing workforce. However, this year’s celebrations carry a special weight. We aren't just looking back at history; we are looking forward to the evolution of a profession that remains the beating heart of our society.

International Nurses Day 2026: Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.

The global theme for 2026, "Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives," is a powerful testament to the necessity of clinical autonomy and professional respect. For our nurses, mental health nurses, and specialists, this theme is more than just a tagline - it is a recognition of their clinical expertise and the life-changing decisions they make every single shift.

At BNA, we have adopted this theme because we know that when a nurse is supported, they are more than just a staff member; they are a catalyst for recovery. By focusing on the future, we are committing to providing our healthcare workers with the resources, flexibility, and professional standing they need to thrive. Empowered nurses lead to better patient outcomes, safer environments, and a more resilient healthcare system for everyone.

Why We Celebrate: Recognizing the Guardians Who Make Healthcare Possible

It is easy to use the word "hero," but in the context of nursing, it is a literal description. We celebrate nurses because they are the individuals who bridge the gap between medical science and human compassion. Whether you are an RGN on a busy ward, a specialist nurse managing complex conditions, or an RMN providing vital mental health support, your role is indispensable.

These essential workers are the ones who advocate for patients when they cannot speak for themselves, who notice the minute changes in a clinical chart that prevent a crisis, and who provide comfort to families during their most difficult hours. By marking Nurses Day with such prominence, we remind the public and our partners that healthcare doesn't just happen in a vacuum - it is delivered through the tireless efforts of dedicated professionals.

The Power of Empowerment: How Supported Nurses Transform Patient Outcomes

Empowerment in nursing means being heard. It means having the confidence to challenge a plan of care if it isn’t in the patient’s best interest and having the backing of an agency that values your expertise. When nurses are empowered, they are more engaged, more innovative, and more likely to provide the high-standard care that defines the BNA reputation.

Research consistently shows that environments where nurses have a voice see lower rates of patient complications. By empowering our staff, we are effectively investing in a safer future for every patient our nurse's touch.

BNA's 2026 Nursing Heroes: Three Stories of Exceptional Dedication

This year, the BNA team is proud to spotlight three individuals who exemplify the very best of our profession. Their nominations reflect the profound respect they have earned from colleagues and clients alike.

Bernadette "Ann" Ward: 45 Years of Compassionate Care and Unwavering Excellence

Bernadette "Ann" Ward

Known to everyone simply as Ann, Bernadette Ward is an RMN who qualified in 1979. To serve as a nurse for over four decades is a monumental achievement, and Ann has spent the last 14 years of that journey with BNA.

Ann’s dedication is one of the primary reasons we have maintained a consistent and trusted presence at one of our client care homes since 2021. Her standards never waver; she is a beacon of compassion and clinical skill. Clients specifically request Ann because they know that when she is on duty, they are in the best possible hands. Her willingness to change her personal plans to ensure a shift is covered or a client is supported speaks volumes about her character. She is a truly valued agency nurse who embodies the "caring and compassionate" spirit we should all strive for.

Dawn Heron: Coming Out of Retirement to Answer the Call

Dawn Heron

Dawn Heron, RGN, who came out of retirement to support our client. She consistently covers difficult shifts, responds to last-minute needs, and has stepped in mid-shift. Sacrificing personal time without complaint to ensure continuity of care, Dawn's selflessness and dedication make her truly deserving of being called a hero.

Retirement is a hard-earned milestone, but for Dawn Heron, RGN, the call to care was too strong to ignore. Dawn made the selfless decision to come out of retirement to support her clients, and since then, she has shown a level of passion that is truly inspiring.

Dawn is the definition of a "team player." She consistently steps in to cover the early and late shifts that are often the most difficult to fill. Her reliability is unmatched; she has even stepped in to cover shifts that have already begun, demonstrating incredible flexibility. Whether supporting a hospice or a nursing home, Dawn’s positive attitude never slips. She has even sacrificed weekends with her family to ensure continuity of care for her patients. Dawn’s work ethic is a reminder that the heart of a nurse never truly retires.

Godwin Amarikwa-Obi: Building Trust Through Reliability and Compassionate Professionalism

Godwin Amarikwa-Obi

Godwin Amarikwa-Obi consistently demonstrates an outstanding attitude and commitment to his role. Reliable and punctual, he picks up shifts at short notice, day or night. Clients request him by name—a testament to the trust, professionalism, and compassionate care he delivers. His dedication and work ethic make him a truly valued member of the team.

Godwin Amarikwa-Obi is a shining example of the proactive, positive approach that makes a nurse truly stand out. Since joining the BNA team, Godwin has established himself as a highly reliable and punctual professional who is always ready to support the service at a moment’s notice.

What makes Godwin’s nomination so special is the trust he has built with those in his care. Clients have reached out to request him by name - a testament to the deep relationships and sense of security he fosters. Whether he is working a day shift or an emergency night call-out, Godwin delivers a high standard of care with a compassionate touch. His work ethic and dependability make him a vital asset to our team and a hero to the clients he serves.

The Legacy of Care: What These Heroes Teach Us About Nursing's Future

The stories of Ann, Dawn, and Godwin are not just accounts of individual hard work; they are blueprints for the future of the profession. They show us that while technology and medicine change, the core values of nursing - reliability, empathy, and professional excellence - remain constant.

These heroes teach us that being an "empowered nurse" isn't just about authority; it's about the power to make a difference in a single person's life through presence and skill. As we look towards the future of healthcare, BNA remains committed to supporting our healthcare workers in every step of their journey.

To all our nurses: thank you for your sacrifice, your skill, and your unwavering commitment. You are not just our present; you are our future. Happy International Nurses Day.
